April Rovero – Founder/CEO
April retired from Lucent Technologies as a National Program Management Director in 2001 after a 30 year career in telecommunications.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Masters Certificate in Program Management from Stephen’s Institute of Technology.April founded NCAPDA as a result of her son, Joey’s, accidental death on December 18, 2009 from a lethal mixture of alcohol and prescription drugs while attending Arizona State University. April leads and oversees all aspects of the organization and is the Chair of both the Contra Costa County Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Coalition and the California Prescription Drug Abuse Workgroup.

Jim Hansen – President
Jim is a security professional with over 14 years of experience  in implementing and building software products. He is currently the Senior Director of Product Management for a software company in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he is responsible for all security and compliance solutions.  Jim has a B.S. in Information and Computer Science from UC Irvine and is an active speaker at IT security conferences and events throughout the world.  He is the son of April and Joseph Rovero and brother of  Joey Rovero.  In his capacity as President, Jim assists with NCAPDA’s strategic and tactical initiatives and helps raise awareness through his participation as a key member of NCAPDA’s Speaker’s Bureau.

Joseph Rovero – Treasurer
Joe is Joey’s father, and the co-founder of NCAPDA. Joe is a graduate of Connecticut School of Electronics and he retired as a Program Manager with AT&T in 1998 with 25 years of telecommunications experience. He is the financial manager and planner for the organization and provides technical, operational and strategic assistance to members of NCAPDA’s staff as needed.

Using Scott’s vast educational knowledge, experience and contact base, his role at NCAPDA is to assist in the development of prescription drug educational tools and programs and to help establish opportunities to use them.
mohitMohit Bhatt – Director
Mohit is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology-Human Physiology with a minor degree in Chemistry.  He works as the Chief Neurocognitive Rehabilitation Therapist at an alternative medicine office in San Ramon, CA.  Mohit has experience with medical research, has developed next generation non-migratory surgical tubing and has worked with a team to develop an alternative method of treatment for Nasopharyngeal Cancer using Protodynamic Therapy.  Mohit applies his medical knowledge and experience in support of NCAPDA’s mission and goals and is a member of NCAPDA’s Speaker’s Bureau.

Babette works as an international Substance Abuse Prevention Educator for a leading global non-profit organization equipping students, adults and entire communities with the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy choices.  She is a graduate of the University of San Francisco with a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Behavior and Leadership.  Raised in the East Bay area of San Francisco and residing in Danville, CA with her husband for the past twenty years, Babette is an active community member and volunteer who educates her local communities about the danger of drug use.  As the mother of a teenager growing up in the San Ramon Valley, Babette has a vested interest in the overall health, safety and wellbeing of the community’s youth and theri respective families.  The devastating effects of prescription drug abuse and personal loss was the catalyst that brought Babette to find and serve the NCAPDA.

Patty is the Alcohol Policy Coordinator at Discovery Counseling Center, coordinating a coalition of community members working to reduce underage drinking and drug use in the San Ramon Valley. Patty has long history of supporting youth and parents in this area. She worked for 13 years as a parent classroom volunteer and in various capacities within the Parent Teachers Association, which she is still a member of. Patty is currently the President-elect of the Dougherty Valley/San Ramon Rotary Club and brings a wealth of experience to her position as a Director for the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse.
Julie Riele - DirectorJulie Riele – Director
Julie is the owner of Danville Business Center, a shared office services company, located in Danville, CA.  She is a graduate of UC Berkeley and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.  Julie and her husband, Gary, have lived and worked in the San Ramon Valley for over 25 years and have raised their two children there.  She is active in her local community and is passionate about educating people about the dangers of prescription drug abuse, especially youth and young adults.  As a Director for NCAPDA, Julie identifies and coordinates community outreach opportunities, represents NCAPDA at various community educational events and maintains various records and databases.

Area Coordinators

The following are people who manage activities in other areas of the country.
frankie-andrews-tnFrankie Andrews – Area Director, North Carolina
As Area Director, Frankie oversees and manages all of NCAPDA’s awareness building activities throughout the state of North Carolina. He was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and relocated to Mount Airy, No. Carolina in (1976). Frankie is the father of 5-year old Colton, who is the focus and light of his life. Frankie became actively involved in his advocacy work against prescription drug abuse after his family suffered the devastating loss of his sister’s two sons, Matthew (age 25) and Brandon (age 26) from Methadone and Ativan in 2006 and 2010, respectively. By sharing his nephews’ stories and the impact their loss has had on his family and community, Frankie has helped countless others understand how dangerous prescription drugs can be when used recreationally or even when they are legitimately prescribed by a doctor.

Staff

The following are staff members who assist with the day-to-day operations of NCAPDA.
Thumbnail image of Dr. Ken SaffierDr. Ken Saffier – Medical Director
Dr. Saffier is a family and addiction medicine physician who throughout his career has been involved in medical school, residency and health professions education with special focus on addiction medicine, chronic pain management and motivational interviewing. He is a member of the Residency Leadership Group of the Contra Costa Regional Family Medicine Residency, located in Martinez, California. In 2008, he completed a faculty development fellowship at USC’s Division of Medical Education and is Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, UC San Francisco. In 2012, he became a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. After receiving his medical degree from SUNY, Stony Brook, he completed his family medicine residency at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital, and has continued to work in “safety net” hospitals in medically underserved communities. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Saffier actively works collaboratively with NCAPDA’s Board members in direct support of NCAPDA’s mission.
Kathy RainsKathy Rains – Legal Director
Kathy brings her experience as a law enforcement officer and attorney to her position as NCAPDA’s legal advisor. She retired from Contra Costa County as a Deputy Sheriff and served in the Town of Danville as a police officer. Kathy is currently an attorney specializing in Family, Criminal and Employment Law. In her private practice she provides legal counsel to local youth, representing their interests in criminal matters that all too often involve substance abuse. She is committed to helping NCAPDA educate youth and young adults about the dangers, both physically and legally, that can stem from prescription drug abuse. Kathy has a teenage son who works as one of NCAPDA’s Youth Ambassadors, helping to bring prescription drug abuse education to his high school peers.
 Melanie BartolettiMelanie Bartoletti – Media Director
Melanie is the owner and CEO of Gianni’s Italian Bistro in San Ramon, CA.  She is the Founder and Past Director of SonRise Equestrian Foundation, a non-profit organization that uses horses to enrich the lives of children dealing with social, emotional and physical challenges.  In 2010, she received Diablo Magazine’s Threads of Hope Award as well as the Jefferson Award for her outstanding contributions while working with her Foundation.  Melanie has a Bachelor’s degree in Christian Leadership from Patten University.  As NCAPDA’s Media Director, Melanie engages all forms of media to educate the public about prescription drug abuse dangers and to promote NCAPDA’s activities and events.  Melanie also takes the lead in identifying and organizing fundraising opportunities to support the educational work NCAPDA is engaged in.

Dan White is the owner of Share-A-Vision Productions in San Ramon, CA. They do primarily event video and photography and have been in business about 10 years. They serve the greater San Francisco Bay Area reaching out to Sacramento and the Monterey Peninsula.

Hank designed and produced NCAPDA’s website and provides ongoing technical support. He has also been directly affected by prescription drug abuse, as his daughter, Kelly, was Joey Rovero’s girlfriend.

Community Advisors

Tim Barley - AdvisorTim Barley, Pastor, Valley Bible Church, Pleasanton
Tim Barley graduated from Stetson University (DeLand, FL) with a degree in Business Administration (B.B.A.) and  Golden Gate Seminary (Mill Valley, CA) with a Masters of Divinity.  Tim has has been serving as the pastor to students and families at Valley Bible Church at the Crossing in Pleasanton for nearly twenty years. He has served as a leader in community organizations as a board member and highly requested speaker for  parent and teen seminars through Teen Esteem, a program addressing issues of adolescent health in public and private High Schools and Middle Schools in the Bay Area.  He also serves as a chaplain for the San Ramon Valley Fire District and has served in this role for nearly a decade.  Tim is a gifted communicator and has been invited to speak at camps, conferences, and seminars throughout California, the United States and internationally.
Kristie ManningDr. Kristie Manning, Pediatric Hospitalist
Dr. Manning grew up in Pleasanton, CA as the oldest of 4 children.  She completed her undergraduate work at UCLA in 2001, where she majored in Physiological Science.  After graduation from UCLA, she spent a year in Washington, D.C. doing research at the National Institutes of Health.  She started medical school in 2002 at the University of Chicago and completed pediatric residency in Chicago from 2006-2009 at Children’s Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Manning returned to the Bay Area in the summer of 2009 and currently lives in San Francisco.  She practices as a Pediatric Hospitalist at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Dave currently serves as the Executive Director of the Dorothy Day House (DDH) (for homeless and low income residents of the city of Berkeley). Prior to coming to DDH he served as Executive Director for the Contra Costa Humane Society, Valley Humane Society, Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation and the San Ramon Valley Community Services Group. Other work experiences included being the Director of Community Services for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District and as a Recreation Supervisor for the City of Palo Alto.Dave is a life member of the San Ramon Valley Kiwanis Club (since 1971), and has served as the President of the Danville Chamber of Commerce. He has participated in annual Leadership programs in Walnut Creek, San Ramon Valley, Pleasanton and Livermore.Dave’s forty-one years of varied professional experiences has led him to a belief that his true gift in life is to help others. That value system is based in a strong sense of community, commitment to family, love of animals and care for people in need.

Founder and principal of JS Consulting, has worked in behavioral health for over 20 years. She has a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology with an Addictions Studies specialization and is a Registered Addiction Specialist. She has worked in both outpatient and inpatient settings.Ms. Stegman currently brings her wealth of addictions treatment experience to Gracer Behavioral Services where she is the Director of this cutting edge team that is bringing the very latest in substance abuse and mental health services to Northern California. The founder and Director of Teen Esteem, Linda Turnbull, is dedicated to equipping, educating and empowering teens, parents and the community on issues related to teens and adolescent health. She is passionate about promoting a healthy lifestyle for teens, especially in the area of high risk adolescent behavior. Her desire is to bring a message of truth to teenagers and to encourage them to think about the choices they are making; as well as to consider what is best for them, not only today, but for their future. Linda has been married for 30 years and has two grown daughters.
