OxyContin Poster Children 15 Years Later Documentary

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on September 9, 2012 by April RoveroJune 12, 2016

This documentary developed by Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP) tells the story of two chronic pain patients who were treated with OxyContin. They served as model patients in videos produced by Purdue Pharma, the company that makes OxyContin. At first, OxyContin worked well for them. But eventually they were seriously harmed by the medication. This documentary serves as a wake-up call for both patients and physicians who are encouraged to find alternative solutions whenever possible for managing chronic pain rather than opioid treatment to avoid the possibility of downstream dependence, addiction and overdose death. The target audience is adults.

Collin’s Story

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on August 23, 2012 by April RoveroMay 6, 2016

We lost our 20-year-old son, Collin, to an accidental heroin overdose in March. The police found the person who sold Collin the heroin and he confessed. I was hopeful that a recently revised law, unanimously passed and signed in July, would be used to charge this person.  Unfortunately, this has not happened and I suspect the person who sold Collin the drugs could be continuing to use and sell to others.  I know what you’re thinking: That’s too bad, but it doesn’t affect me. And besides, if drugs were involved, he must have been a bad kid.  Those who know … Continue reading →

As a child, my blond, blue eyed boy was happy, gregarious and the light of our seemingly perfect families lives. He grew up in a loving family with an involved Stay At Home Mom, an attentive Father who worked hard to provide a nice life, in a town with nice neighborhoods, good schools and a younger sister who adored him. Now, at at age 21 he is an IV drug user addicted to the powerful painkiller Oxycontin and in his second treatment center in a year. His addiction and actions the past few years has torn our family apart. His … Continue reading →

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on July 30, 2010 by April RoveroMay 6, 2016

On December 18th 2009, one of my best friends Joseph John Rovero III died from a combination of prescription drugs. Although I am an active member of the NCAPDA and have spoken openly about the loss of my friend, I still find it difficult to put my feelings into words. Losing Joey has changed my life in so many ways and it still does not seem real that he is gone. I would give anything just for one more joke, one more smile, one more memory with him. But since this cannot be I will dedicate the rest of my … Continue reading →

Joey Rovero

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on May 28, 2010 by April RoveroMay 6, 2016
Joey in Jersey

On March 9, 1988, a very special child was born to the Rovero family. Initially, we had planned to name him Daniel, but as his birth grew closer, his father decided that he wanted him to carry on the family name, so he became Joseph John Rovero, III. From the start, we all called him “Joey”, and this name suited him perfectly. Joey was a very happy baby, toddler and youngster who took an immediate liking to sports of all kinds.
