Involved Stay At Home Mom

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on November 15, 2010 by April RoveroMay 6, 2016

As a child, my blond, blue eyed boy was happy, gregarious and the light of our seemingly perfect families lives. He grew up in a loving family with an involved Stay At Home Mom, an attentive Father who worked hard to provide a nice life, in a town with nice neighborhoods, good schools and a younger sister who adored him. Now, at at age 21 he is an IV drug user addicted to the powerful painkiller Oxycontin and in his second treatment center in a year. His addiction and actions the past few years has torn our family apart. His … Continue reading →

Julian’s Story

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on October 8, 2010 by Hank MoreiraMay 6, 2016

Not all overdoses of prescription drugs are recreational; some are quite intentional. Here’s the story of my son’s suicide. Julian was 20 when he died. He’d battled depression since the onset of puberty. He’d been in and out of treatment several times. He was on various prescribed anti-depressants at any given time. As a young man, ashamed about his condition, he fought the idea of having to be medicated, even though – when he complied with his doctor’s instructions, and took his meds regularly (i.e., every day at the prescribed dosage without combining with alcohol) – his symptoms abated, and … Continue reading →

Warning Signs and Giving Back

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on August 8, 2010 by Hank MoreiraMay 6, 2016

Our son, was arrested first in 2008 for DWI and a second time in 2009 for possession and sale of Ecstacy. As we look back, both my husband and I realize we should have recognized all of the many warning signs… signs like the ones listed on the home page of this website. But we didn’t. We were blind and in denial. Thankfully, our son found AA and is now celebrating monthly milestones of “clean and sober”. The tenets of AA are worthwhile lessons for any and all of us; they are watchwords for successful living. The most powerful lesson, … Continue reading →

Monitor Your Parent’s Usage

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on July 31, 2010 by Hank MoreiraMay 6, 2016

It is so heartbreaking when these kids think accessible drugs cannot hurt like the illegal ones do. I am “lucky” in that my kids got to see first hand what prescription drugs can do to someone, as my husband’s mom has to be monitored daily with her drugs. Her doctor keeps prescribing pain killers, depression meds etc. We finally got the drug store to call us whenever she gets a new prescription. She does not intentionally get addicted but we find that with older people they take what their doctor says as gospel. If he prescribes it, she takes it. … Continue reading →

Guardian Angel

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on July 30, 2010 by April RoveroMay 6, 2016

On December 18th 2009, one of my best friends Joseph John Rovero III died from a combination of prescription drugs. Although I am an active member of the NCAPDA and have spoken openly about the loss of my friend, I still find it difficult to put my feelings into words. Losing Joey has changed my life in so many ways and it still does not seem real that he is gone. I would give anything just for one more joke, one more smile, one more memory with him. But since this cannot be I will dedicate the rest of my … Continue reading →

My Oxy story

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on July 25, 2010 by Hank MoreiraMay 6, 2016

I had a back injury that led to removal of 2 discs and fusion. Before my surgery I was given a prescription of Oxy with a warning very addictive. Funny he still gave it and many more to me. Couple years ago new injury that caused complications with the old. More powerful scripts given. My pain management doctor became my drug dealer and thought she had my best interest at heart. Ha!!! Almost died from an overdose where they didn’t think I was going to make it-called family. Yes I think the doctor’s are pyrahhia’s!  Nanci Miller nancimiller86@yahoo.com

From where I began…and with where I am now in my life

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on July 25, 2010 by Hank MoreiraMay 6, 2016

My story resembles one of ‘Michael Jackson’…With ‘similarities’, yet ‘differences’… It began approximately ’16’ years ago as I worked in the medical field for 20+ years. I enjoyed my career with those I had spent most of my days, weeks, months, years with. They became a part of my ‘family’. Throughout these years, I would continue to get sick with one thing or another…Usually, something not so ‘simple’ as a ‘normal’ person would think. Normal…I really don’t think I have ever really lived the true definition of ‘normalcy’. As I was growing up, I always had severe stomach pain, anxiety…Whatever … Continue reading →

Joey Rovero

National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse Posted on May 28, 2010 by April RoveroMay 6, 2016
Joey in Jersey

On March 9, 1988, a very special child was born to the Rovero family. Initially, we had planned to name him Daniel, but as his birth grew closer, his father decided that he wanted him to carry on the family name, so he became Joseph John Rovero, III. From the start, we all called him “Joey”, and this name suited him perfectly. Joey was a very happy baby, toddler and youngster who took an immediate liking to sports of all kinds.
