1st Place: Siena Kuan, 12th Grade, Acalanes High School, Lafayette, CA
“Natural High” is exactly what it sounds like. To experience or do something that makes you feel as if you are high. But, the benefits of a natural high greatly our weighs the benefits, if any, of getting high through drug use. My “Natural High” is art, the act of being creative and creating something new. This helps keep me substance free because I don’t want to loose my creativity. I don’t want to become dependent on a substance that could ruin my life. With my “Natural High” I am able to explore and think clearly while still feeling like I’m on cloud nine. With my “Natural High” I could become someone, get a job and be happy, these aspects of my life I am not willing to lose. My “Natural High” is a huge contributor of my life that I don’t want to lose to substance abuse.
2nd Place: Ryan Chatterji, 10th Grade, Acalanes High School, Lafayette, CA
For me personally, I love nature so my inspiration for my poster was nature. I’ll tend to take walks around a local park near my house and I’ll just bask in the scenery, because of how beautiful it is. This reminds me that there are better things in this world than drugs and substances.
3rd Place: Cassidy McAlpin, 10th Grade Campolindo High School, Moraga, CA
I absolutely love photography. In my poster, I used some of my favorite photos that I’ve recently taken of nature. I surrounded a photograph (a picture of my friend while she was taking photos) with pictures I had taken that day of different items in nature. Photography is a common interest between my friend and I; we both love to try to capture the beauty that surrounds us. Photography has created a lot of opportunities for me. I’ve met a lot of people, became better friends with others, and seen a lot of amazing things. I love to take pictures and to share them with others. Photography definitely helps in keeping me substance free. Photography allows me to relax and get my mind off school and other stressful things. Photography is “My Natural High”. It’s my passion in life. It provides an escape from the world and it gives my life more meaning.

Surry County Contest – High School Winners
1st Place: Mallie Hutchens, Elkin High School, Elkin, NC
In my poster I have included objects that would keep me and many others substance free. The poster includes sports, education, and religion as some of the many factors that keeps someone’s mindset right. For me, education is a big reason as to why I would stay substance free because with an education, I can go a long way. My poster doesn’t only apply to me, though. I made my poster so it can apply to all kinds of people who are struggling with substance abuse or know of others who are struggling. For example, many family members have struggled with substance abuse, but with the help of family and the idea of their future, they have became substance free.
2nd Place: Dakota Eads, East Surry High School, Pilot Mountain NC
My natural high poster is about my love and enjoyment that I get out of band and playing music. It takes a lot of focus and passion to stick with an instrument, and plan your career around it. I have been playing music 6 years and plan to do it for the rest of my life. I don’t need drugs in my life because I have my family, my band family, and my love for music.
3rd Place: MacKenzie Bullins, 11th Grade, Elkin High School, Elkin, NC
My Natural High is competitive cheerleading. In my poster I have drawn a team during their routine using the “My Natural High” logo as the name of the competition. This shows that cheerleading is more important in my life. It keeps me busy and distracted from wanting to involve myself in drugs. I find that cheerleading brings me joy and the “high” I need to get through life. This is why cheerleading is my Natural High.
